Two works from popular and prolific English historical novelist William Harrison Ainsworth.

In wonderful signed full morocco bindings by Zaehnsdorf, with gilt Tudor roses to back strips and board perimeters, and with gilt dentelles.

The first of these works is the first single volume edition of 'The Star-Chamber: An Historical Romance', the second edition overall after the 1854 two volume first edition. This is the 'first illustrated edition and 'the edition that commands the biggest price and which is most difficult to obtain in a really fine state', Locke.

Illustrated with eight plates. Retaining half title. Collated, complete.

The second work is the first edition of 'Ovingdean Grange: A Tale of the South Downs'. Illustrated with eight plates. Collated, complete.

With the bookplate of Henry Hales P Bouverie to each front pastedown, and the label of Austin Denham Smith to each front free endpaper.

Each volume is illustrated throughout by Hablot Knight Browne, better known as Phiz, who illustrated works from Charles Dickens, Charles Lever, and Augustus Septimus Mayhew.

Condition

In full morocco signed bindings by Zaehnsdorf, with gilt Tudor roses to board perimeters and back strip, and with decorative gilt dentelles. Back strip and board perimeters age toned. A touch of rubbing to front joint head and back strip tail of 'Ovingdean'. Bookplates to front pastedowns and front free endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages lightly age toned due to paper type, with instances of spotting, most concentrated to plates and leaves surrounding them.
