The second edition of this 1856 work by Atwell Lake about the Crimean War siege and subsequent Russian captivity,
including letters from General Sir W.F. Williams Bart., Major Teesdale, and Captain H.L. Thompson. 

This second edition was published only a month following the first edition. The preface for this edition addresses criticisms by the Editor of the Athenaeum and there is an additional letter included from General Mouravieff.

With two monochrome portrait frontispieces of Lake and General Sir W.F. Williams Bart.

Colonel Lake of the Royal engineers was sent to Russia as a prisoner-of-war after the capitulation of Kars. His narrative is a historical account of the 1855 siege of Kars and the experiences of British officers involved. 

Contains prior owner Francis E. B. Witts' bookplate to front paste down.


Condition

In the publisher's original red cloth binding. Externally, smart with fading to boards and spine. Shelf wear to edges. Marks to boards including noticeable damp stain. Spine rebacked. Tape repair to hinges. Internally, firmly bound. Damp staining also to front free endpaper. Pages have age toning and spotting, heavier to the first and last few pages. Contains prior owner Francis E. B. Witts' bookplate to front paste down.
