The third edition of this work, with many additions.

Each volume is highly illustrated with in-text wood engravings throughout, with a total of five-hundred and fifty engravings across the three volumes.

An immense history and study of British ornithology and natural history, a detailed work that has become a standard reference on the subject.

This work was originally serialised over the course of six years, before being published as bound volumes in 1843.

Compiled by William Yarrell, who is best known for this work and 'The History of British Fishes'.

With the bookplate of the Lindsay Institute of Lanark to the front pastedowns, and their stamp to the title page and final leaf of each volume. Library label to volume II back strip tail.

Condition

In half calf bindings with marbled paper covered boards. Boards bright. Light rubbing to back strip head and tail and raised bands. Label to volume II back strip tail. Tail of volume rear joints starting, with boards firmly held. Front joint of volume I starting, with board held by two cords only. Front free endpaper, half title, and front blank of volume II starting, with board firmly held. Bookplates to front pastedowns. Internally firmly bound. Stamps to title pages and final leaves, with pages otherwise exceptionally clean and bright.
