These volumes are first editions.

These volumes are a biographical compendium focused on prominent British military leaders who served during the Peninsular War (1808–1814).

Each chapter is devoted to a different general, offering detailed accounts of their military careers, personal backgrounds, and roles in major engagements. Memoirs include accounts from generals: Sir John Moore, Sir David Baird, Lord Beresford, Robert Craufurd, Sir G. Lowry Cole, Sir Thomas Picton, Lord Lynedoch, the Earl of Hopetoun, Lord Hill, Le Marchant, Robert Ross, and Sir Edward Pakenham.

Condition

Bound in cloth by by Westleys & Co., London. Externally, generally smart. Volume 1 is in need of repair. Rubbing and bumping to extremities, resulting in the odd loss to cloth. In particular, torn loss to joint of volume 1, causing the spine disbound with about 1 inch of loss to the head, in need of sympathetic repair. One or two handling marks to boards. Spot of damp staining to front board and spine of volume 2. Previous owner's pencil inscriptions to endpapers. Scattered spotting to endpapers, with the odd crease to paste down of volume 1. Internally, a little worn. Pages up to 119 becoming disbound on volume 1, in need of repair. Otherwise, generally firmly bound. Hinges strained. Pages bright and clean with the odd spot, heavier to fist and last few leaves.
