This set includes: A History of British Birds, 1856. Third edition, with many additions. Complete in three volumes. Illustrated with five hundred and fifty wood-engravings. A catalogue of British bird species, with descriptions of each individual species' habits, habitats, plumage, song, and history. Includes a detailed study of the natural history of bird-life in Britain and the changing visitors to the isles. A History of British Fishes, 1859. Third edition. Complete in two volumes. Illustrated with five hundred and twenty-two wood-engravings. A catalogue of British fish species, with descriptions of the habits, feeding, mating, and locations of each species. Includes a memoir of the author, as well as important historical commentary on the changes in fish species over the ages. Edited by Sir John Richardson, a Scottish naval surgeon, naturalist and Arctic explorer. Previously held in the library of Evelyn Baring, 1st Earl of Cromer, a British statesman, diplomat and colonial administrator.

Condition

Bound in half red calf with marbled boards. Externally, very smart with light rubbing to the extremities and the odd small mark to the boards. Fading to the spines. Small cracks to the joints with a 2" crack to the front joint of volume II of A History of British Birds. Front hinge failed to volume I of A History of British Birds with the rear hinge starting but firm. The front hinge of volume II of A History of British Birds is tender. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with the odd spot. Minor age toning to the endpapers. Previous owner's bookplates to the front endpaper and pastedown.
