This set includes: The Lay of the Last Minstrel, 1856. With a vignette title page. Set in the Scottish Borders in the mid-sixteenth century, this narrative poem is presented as being sung by a minstrel telling the tale of the Border feud as he seeks hospitality at Newark Castle. The Lady of the Lake, 1858. With a vignette title page. Set in the Trossachs region of Scotland, this narrative poem is composed of six cantos which represent a single day. With three main plots: the contest of three men to win the love of Ellen Douglas; the feud and reconciliation of King James V of Scotland and James Douglas; and a war between the Lowland Scots and the Highland Clans. Each volume includes all introductions, notes, and various readings.

In the original full crushed morocco binding. Externally, with light rubbing to the extremities. Fading to the spine and a tide mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd spot or handling mark. Tide marks to the odd page. Contemporary ink inscription to the front pastedown.
