Gibson details his experiences in a prison in Weltevreden (now Jakarta, Indonesia), providing further information on the East Indian Archipelago, examining the 'selfishness and asperity of European dominion in the East'.
Gibson was the captain of a ship and became involved in gunrunning in the Caribbean. Later, he was jailed in the East Indies by the Dutch on charges of fomenting rebellion. He was imprisoned in harsh conditions for fifteen months.

Condition
In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to back strip head and tail, with tide mark to back strip, and minor tide mark to fore edge of rear board. Joint heads starting, with boards firmly held. Lacking front free endpaper. Inscription to a front blank. Internally, firmly bound. Pages lightly age toned due to paper type but clean, with only the odd spot or light handling mark. Plates significantly age toned.
