A blue cloth 1855 edition of Wood's illustrated work.

Though reprinted many times, this copy is an example of a very scarce edition published in blue cloth, with an unusual gilt and embossed cover design to the front board, as well as a gilt design of a tree, with various creatures at its roots, to the spine.

This title encapsulates something of Woods' investment in enhancing the accessibility of natural history to the general public. It was this goal that eventually meant he left his position as a curate to furth concentrate his literary efforts, just a year prior to the printing of this edition.
