Description

First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

The first edition.

Bound in cloth with label of Louth Mechanics Institution to the front board.

Volume I only of a three volume set.

Written by British explorer and army officer Richard F. Burton, this work is considered to be one of the most important and extraordinary travel accounts of the nineteenth century.

In this personal narrative, Burton presents his pilgrimage from El-Medinah to Mecca, during which he dressed and acted as though he was a Muslim from the Middle-East. Through this deception, Burton believed he would be privy to a more realistic and genuine experience, which also would allow him full access to different areas, including the Empty Quarter.

Before this account, only a handful of Europeans had made the pilgrimage, with only one other leaving a detailed account of his experience.

Illustrated with a frontispiece, three full-page lithographic plates and folding map.

Collated, complete.

With twenty-two pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear.
