    First Edition, Publishers' Original Binding, Very Scarce

    A very scarce first edition.

    Anonymously authored, the preface is signed by the pseudonym 'Sir John Courteous, Knight'.

    The author explains that he published this work 'in the hope that those who have mottos may spare a moment to ponder what they tell them to be; to think, or to do' and that those without mottos 'will ponder before they choose what consequences the words of their choice will entail upon them and their successors'.

    With an illustrated title page, and letterpress title page.

    With an advertisement leaf to the rear.

    With pencil inscriptions to the front and rear pastedowns and free endpapers.

    A brief but charming work.

    Condition

    In the publisher's original cloth binding. Boards lightly age toned to perimeters. Losses to cloth of back strip. Front joint starting, with front board tenderly held to the head only. Extensive former owner's pencil inscriptions to the front and rear pastedowns and free endpapers. Front free endpaper and two title pages detached and loosely inserted, as are pages vii-viii. Otherwise, internally generally firmly bound. Pages exceptionally clean and bright.
