Description

First Edition, Illustrated, Leather Binding, Rebound

A first book form edition of this novel by William Makepeace Thackeray, volume one published in 1854 and volume two in 1855. The true first edition appeared serially over about two years. Edited by 'Arthur Pendennis,' the protagonist in another novel by Thackeray, Pendennis, who is also the narrator to this story.

Following the story of Captain Thomas Newcome and his son Clive, who dreams to become a painter. Alongside, this novel tells the story of the Newcome family as they rise into wealth and respectability and start marrying into the minor aristocracy.

Interestingly, Thackeray uses the coined word 'capitalism' as reference for an economic system for the first time in this novel.
