Early edition, first published in 1853. Illustrated with a frontispiece, illustrated title page, and five plates. Collated complete. A collection of English poetry comprising short biographies and critical appraisals of some of the most eminent poets through history. Arranged in sections covering modern poets, poets of the Restoration, poets of the Elizabethan age, and early British poets. Exploring the works of such writers as: William Cowper, Robert Burns, John Dryden, Samuel Johnson, Sir Walter Raleigh, John Milton, Geoffrey Chaucer, and James I of Scotland, amongst others. Bound by Pope, Hackney.

Condition

Bound in full calf with gilt. Externally, sound with rubbing to the extremities and light fading to the spine. The odd small mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot or handling mark. Light age toning to the extremities. A contemporary ink inscription to the front free endpaper. Bound by Pope, Hackney.
