First Edition, Illustrated, Leather Binding
The first editions of four volumes of a periodical which aimed to serve as an 'entertaining companion for town and country', and includes passages for the entertainment of young children.
Present here are: Volumes I and II, 1854, and volumes V and VI, 1856.
With vignette illustrations throughout.
Passages within this periodical are devoted to a wide range of topics including amateur bookbinding, the importance of eating vegetables, 'the consumption of dogs in Paris', and a small number of recipes to each volume, including green pea soup, and mushroom soup.
With the bookplate of Martin and Pamela Finch to the front free endpaper. They were antiquarian booksellers with an interest in antiquarian gastronomy.
Condition
In a half calf binding, with marbled paper covered boards. Rubbing to back strip head and tail, board perimeters, and joints. Front joint starting, with board somewhat tenderly held by one cord only. Bookplate to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages lightly age toned, with the odd handling mark.
