Three volumes. This set includes No. 267 Saturday December 9th 1854, 2nd Series No. 9 Saturday March 1st 1856, and 2nd Series No. 13 Saturday March 29th 1856. Established in 1849, Notes and Queries is a long-running quarterly scholarly journal that publishes short articles related to "English language and literature, lexicography, history, and scholarly antiquarianism" with emphasis is on "the factual rather than the speculative". Its motto, as printed on each of these volumes, was once "When found, make a note of", the catchphrase of Captain Cuttle, a character in Dickens's novel Dombey and Son. With articles on subjects such as: the history of the church, free trade in books, things not generally known, curiosities of London, history of the English Revolution, Parish sermons, and more.
Condition
In the original paper wraps. Externally, sound with rubbing and light creases to the extremities. Light sunning to the extremities with the odd small mark. The odd small closed tear to the page edges. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd spot or handling mark. Light creases to the odd page.
