A controversial lecture discussing the practise of white slavery in the Barbary States, including the Ottoman provinces of Algeria, Tunisia and Tripolitania, between the 16th and middle of the 18th century. Originally issued as a lecture by Charles Sumner in 1847 before the Boston Mercantile Library Association.
Sumner was a leading American advocate for the abolition of slavery before and during the American Civil War.
Condition
In the original cloth binding. Externally, fading to the cloth, particularly to the spine. Reference label and text offsetting to the spine. Rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Damp stain to the rear board. Bookplate of the Minnesota Historical Society to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with tide mark to the first few leaves. Scattered spots to the endpapers.
