For his Imaginary Conversations he drew on a vast array of historical characters from Greek philosophers to contemporary writers. He composed conversations between pairs of characters that covered areas of philosophy, politics, romance and many other topics. With regards to his poetry, he is now often described as 'a poet's poet' and author of perhaps the greatest very short poems in English. Some of the best known 19th century poets, Yeats, Ezra Pound and Robert Frost among them, were influenced by him.
