Funded by Herbert Ingram, The Illustrated London News began weekly publication in 1842, with its illustrations and rich collection of world news including the royal family’s tours, lives, and deaths earning the paper its significant popularity. As a newsagent, Ingram was struck by the reliable increase in newspaper sales when they featured pictures and shocking stories. Ingram began to plan a weekly newspaper that would contain pictures in every edition.
The work is credited with moving illustrations from purely a satirical device in mainstream news, to a credible and factual reporting tool.
