First edition of the work bound in brown calf leather.

Featuring a folding frontispiece, nine black-and-white plates, four of which are folded, and two folding maps at the rear of the book. Collated complete.

From Sir Austen Henry Layard, renowned archaeologist, Assyriologist and politician, among other interests.

This text details Layard's second expedition undertaken for the trustees of the British Museum, following his 1852 publication A Popular Account of Discoveries at Nineveh, an abridged version of the 1849 Nineveh and its Remains.

Condition

Bound in full brown calf. Externally, generally smart with bumping and rubbing, especially to spine and spine tips. Marking to front and rear boards. Moderate damp staining to front board. Bookplate from Francis E. B. Witts to front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean with the exception of slight spotting and significant tide marks to the first sixteen pages, including the first folding plate. Ink insciption from previous owner on half-title page.
