The first book edition, first printing with issue points according to Eckel 'elgble' to p.19 line 6; 'chair' instead of 'hair' to p.209 line 23; 'counsinship instead of cousinship' to pg.275 line 22. Other edition points inaccessible as the volume is bound in with chapters I-XXXII up to p.320 of 624pp. With the imprint of Bradbury and Evans on vignette title. No half title.
Originally published in a series of twenty-episodes between 1852 and 1853. Bleak House is one of Charles Dickens' most popular novels, with a vastly complicated plot and an immense cast of characters revolving around the long-running case of Jarndyce vs Jarndyce in the Court of Chancery.
This novel helped support a reform movement in the judiciary system that led to the enactment of legal reform in the 1870.
With a frontispiece and additional vignette title page, as well as twenty plates, with only the frontispiece being a dark plate. Collated, complete as called for for the first thirty-two chapters.
Illustrated by Hablot Knight Browne, also known by his pen name ‘Phiz’, English illustrator who illustrated ten of Charles Dickens' books, including 'David Copperfield', and 'Dombey and Son'.
Condition
Rebound in half calf binding over marbled boards, with spine title on black calf. Externally sound with some shelf wear and minor rubbing to the boards, chipped to the extremities of the boards. With Library bookplate to the front pastedown. Previous ownership inscription to the front free endpaper, undated. Internally, firmly bound. Light spotting scattered throughout. Occasional ownership inscriptions to the back of the occasional plate. With a frontispiece and additional vignette title page, as well as twenty plates, with only the frontispiece being a dark plate. Collated, complete as called for for the first thirty-two chapters. Some staining mark to the plate to face p. 2208 'The Smallweed Family.'
