1852 The Lady of Shalott
What Our Customers Say...
Description
Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding
A unique and very scarce illustrated edition of Alfred Tennyson's 'The Lady of Shalott'.
Illustrated throughout "by a Lady, for the benefit of The Midland Institution for the Blind". Anonymously illustrated, this edition highlights the popularity of Tennyson's poem in Victorian England. By the time of this publication, the poem itself was very well-known and therefore relied on the new illustrations to attract customers.
These particular illustrations are straightforward in content, although include striking, exaggerated features, bringing to life the characters.
Containing eleven, full page illustrations. Lacking the second page of the poem and the second plate.
Originally published in 1832, this dramatic lyrical ballad tells the tragic story of Elaine of Astolat, a young woman deserted on the top of a tower, up the river Camelot.
Bound in blue cloth.
With the bookplate of Nottingham Reference Library and an issue sheet.
