First Edition, Publishers' Original Binding, Uncommon

An uncommon first edition, in the publisher's original cloth binding.

With the former owner's inscription of John Gibson to the title page head. This is the inscription of Sir John Watson Gibson, a civil engineer who is most notable for having designed a key part of the Mulberry harbours for the 1944 Normandy landings.

Illustrated with a portrait frontispiece.

A biographical and historical study of the great architect Sir Christopher Wren, situating his life and works within the political, scientific, and artistic currents of 17th and early 18th century England.

Elmes traces Wren's early career in mathematics and astronomy, and his central role in rebuilding London after the Great Fire.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Back strip age toned, with bumping and light fraying to back strip head and tail. Head of front joint starting, with board just a touch tender. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright. Pencil inscription to title page head.
