The very scarce first English language edition of this work, published in the same year as the original French.
The work of Francois Pierre Guillaume Guizot, a French historian, orator and statesman. Once a dominant figure in French politics, he worked to sustain a constitutional monarchy in the country, and opposed attempts by Charles X to usurp legislative power.
Containing five essays on Shakespeare by Guizot, titled 'Shakespeare and his Times', 'Shakespeare's Tragedies', 'Dramatic Art in France', 'Shakespeare's Historical Dramas' and 'Shakespeare's Comedies'.
With the armorial bookplate of 'Cranstoun of Corehouse' to the front pastedown. George Cranstoun, Lord Corehouse was a Scottish advocate, judge and satirist.
Condition
In the publisher's original cloth binding. Significant discolouration to back strip and board perimeters, with marks to boards. Bumping to spine heads and tails. Worm holes to back strip, not affecting text block. Bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean.
