Description

Early Edition, Publishers' Original Binding

The third edition of this work, complete in two volumes.

In the scarce publisher's original cloth.

First published in 1848, this work is a foundational text within classical economics, discussing topics such as production, distribution, and the role of government in shaping economic outcomes.

In his work, Mill distinguishes between natural laws governing production and the socially constructed rules of distribution, arguing that policies can be changed to promote fairness. He presents an argument for progressive taxation, workers' rights, and limited government intervention where markets fail.

This work influenced both the liberal and socialist traditions.

With four pages of advertisements to the rear of volume II.

With the inscription of Augustine Birrell, Trinity Hall, Cambridge, to the front free endpaper of volume I.

British Liberal Party politician, who was Chief Secretary for Ireland from 1907 to 1916. He was praised for enabling tenant farmers to own their property and for extending university education for Catholics, but was criticised for failing to take action against the rebels before the Easter Rising, leading to his subsequent resignation.

In 1856, this book was included in the Index Librorum Prohibitorum, thus being banned by the Catholic Church.
