William Cowper was the one of the foremost poets of the eighteenth century and for several decades had probably the largest readership of any English poet. Renowned for monumentally influencing the later generation of Romantic poets, Cowper's poetry was characterised through his detailed descriptions of rural life, his concern for the poor and downtrodden, and the startling simplicity of language. With a biography of Cowper to the front of the text. With a portrait frontispiece of Cowper (including a facsimile of his signature), an illustrated title page, and six monochromatic plates each with a protective tissue guard.
Condition
In a full crushed morocco binding with elaborate gilt embellishment to the boards and spine. Externally, slightly rubbed to extremities, joints, and head and tail of spine. Slight fading to spine. Contemporary ink inscription to front free-endpaper, dated '1853'. Internally firmly bound. Pages slightly age toned, with light scattered spots to the occasional page.
