Folding Maps, Illustrated, Scarce

The scarce 1851 census detailing the population of England and Wales in 1851, printed and published by Her Majesty's Stationary Office and presented to the Houses of Parliament in 1852. 

Complete, with all three volumes bound in two. Volumes I and II of the Population Tables of the census are present, with volume III, the index volume, bound in to the rear of volume II. 

Volume I is divided into six divisions, with individual paginations and half titles, with each division detailing the population in various counties in the first half of the nineteenth century. This volume is illustrated with twelve maps, eleven of which are folding, and the majority of which are in colour.

Volume II is divided into five divisions. This volume is illustrated with five folding maps.

The index volume provides information on Scotland and the 'Islands in the British Seas'.

Collated, complete.

Bound in half vellum with marbled paper covered boards, and with the stamp of the Hatfield House Library to the title pages and throughout each volume. With the bookplate of the Newport Reference Library to the front pastedowns.

A scarce and precise original source detailing the population and concentration of Great Britain's inhabitants in the first half of the nineteenth century.

Condition

In half vellum bindings, with marbled cloth covered boards. Significant handling marks to vellum portions of bindings. Otherwise, externally excellent. Front hinge of volume II lightly strained, but firmly held. Library bookplates to front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Title pages detached to tails, but firmly held. Pages bright, and generally clean. Library stamps to title pages and to a number of leaves throughout each volume, frequently to reverse of folding plates.
