Illustrated with a total of three-hundred and fifty-seven fine hand-coloured plates, with sixty to Volume I, sixty to Volume II, fifty-nine to Volume III, sixty-two to Volume IV, fifty-seven to Volume V, and sixty to Volume VI.

Collated, complete.

An immense history and study of British ornithology and natural history, a detailed work that has become a standard reference on the subject.

This was the author's first best seller - it was published in monthly parts from June 1850 over a period of seven years. Initially only a thousand copies of these parts were published, but the work quickly became very popular and saw great demand.

Condition

In a half calf binding with cloth to the boards. Externally, smart. Spines are a little faded. A few very small patches of rubbing to the boards and spines, and a few light marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with scattered spotting. Small chip to the tail of Plate 3 with no loss to the image. Closed tear to Plate 110. Pencil to Plate 205.
