From popular Victorian author William Harrison Ainsworth, most famous for his 1834 Rookwood starring notorious highwayman Dick Turpin. Ainsworth published around 40 novels in his lifetime, many of them historical romances such as this text.
The story is based on the 1612 Pendle Witch Trials in Lancashire, which involved the hanging of twelve people accused of murder by witchcraft. Ainsworth rigourously researched the event before writing the book visiting historical sites and one of the families of the victims.
