First Edition, Publishers' Original Binding, Very Scarce

The first edition.

A very scarce work.

This is a prize-winning essay, entered to a competition which had been publicized in ten London papers. The advert asked for essays discussing "the fearful and growing prevalence of juvenile depravity, and the inadequacy of the various means hitherto employed to meet the evil".

By Reverend Henry Worsley, who won the £100 prize.

Condition

In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Spine and extremities are faded. Light bumping to the head and teal of the spine, with a small amount of loss to the head of the spine. A few light marks to the cloth, including an ink mark to the spine. Front hinge is a little strained but remains firm. Bookseller's label to the front paste down. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto of the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with a few scattered spots. Lacing page 261 to 264.
