Description

Early Edition, First Edition, Leather Binding

Two mid-nineteenth century works by Francis Bond Head, bound in one half morocco volume.

The first of these two works is the 1850 second edition of 'High-Ways & Dry-Ways', a detailed and informative account of the engineering and construction of the Britannia and Conway tubular bridges, two impressive Welsh rail bridges, both constructed in a similar manner to one another.

The second work, by the same author, is the 1849 first edition of 'Stokers and Pokers: or, the London and North-Western Railway, the Electric Telegraph, and the Railway Clearing House'.

This offers an account of the construction of the line, its rolling stock, information on deliveries and goods carried, and with additional notes on places of importance on the route.

With the bookplate of acknowledged railway enthusiast Sir William McAlpine, 6th Baronet, to the front free endpaper. He was President of the Transport Trust, the charity dedicated to the preservation of all modes of transport and its infrastructure. In 1973 he purchased the historic steam train the Flying Scotsman, and ran the service for the British public.

With the former owner's label of Owen J. Williams to the front pastedown.

Sir Francis Bond Head was an officer in the Royal Engineers and Lieut-General of Upper Canada at the time of the 1837 rebellion. He authored a number of works on travel and politics including 'Bubbles from the Brunnens of Nassau'.
