Charles William Vane (1778–1854), formerly Charles Stewart, was a British cavalry officer and diplomat. This is his account of the Peninsular War, recounting the movement of the forces, the strategies employed, and their effectiveness.
The Peninsular War (1807–1814) was a major conflict during the Napoleonic Wars in which the allied forces of Spain, Portugal, and Britain fought against the invading French Empire on the Iberian Peninsula. The war is known for its brutality, use of guerrilla warfare, and for the emergence of Arthur Wellesley as a prominent British commander, later known as the Duke of Wellington.
