It includes the preface to the 1840 edition and the revised preface for this edition. It includes a frontispiece designed by H. K. Browne introducing the character of Peter Clifford.
Paul Clifford lives double life as a gentleman and highwayman. Set during the French Revolution it tells the story of criminality. A story of high drama and suspense.
The book was successful upon realise and contains the famous line 'It was a dark and stormy night...' which has become a popular phrase for evoking gothic mystery.
This edition also includes a short extract of The Tomlinsoniana: or The Posthumous Writings of the celebrated Augustus Tomlinson.
Condition
Bound in a half calf binding. Externally fairly smart. Rubbing to the boards and spine resulting in loss. Cracking to the joints. Fading to the leather. Externally firmly bound. Offsetting to the front pastedown. A water mark to the frontispiece. Spotting to the first and last pages but pages generally bright and clean.
