A very scarce first edition.
A naval memoir recounting the author's service on the East African station in the mid-nineteenth century, where Royal Navy vessels patrolled against illegal slave trading.
The narrative provides interesting descriptions of Zanzibar, including a reception and subsequently a dinner with the Imaum of Muscat.
Collated, endpapers renewed. Lacking half title.
Rebound in cloth.
With the bookplate of the Bath Public Reference Library to the front pastedown, and their blind stamp to title page head and a small number of further leaves.
In a contemporary review, the Spectator noted that "there is... a good deal of incident; pursuits of slavers, hair-breadth escapes, interviews with barbarian potentates, an attack by savages on boats, and finally the destruction of [Barnard's] last ship, the war-steamer Thunderbolt, by going ashore, and the indefatigable efforts made to save her".

Rebound in cloth, with endpapers renewed. Externally, fine. Library bookplate and inscription to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages lightly age toned due to paper type, but clean. Library blind stamp to title page head and to head of a small number of leaves throughout. Lacking half title.
