The second edition of a History of the British Zoophytes, written by Scottish physician and naturalist George Johnston. Published by John Van Voorst in 1947. First published in 1838.
In the publisher's original green cloth. Volume one contains numerous in-text illustrations of different zoophytes and their quintessential characteristics, completed by Johnston's wife and botanical illustrator Catharine. Volume two is made up of 72 plates out of a possible 74 plates (plates 64 and 65 missing), containing larger and more detailed illustrations that are referenced in volume 1. Collated complete.
The first detailed study into the strange and overlooked zoophytes of Britain, strange creatures that are on the border between plant and animal. The second edition contains descriptions and drawings newly discovered species since the first publication.
Condition
In the publisher's original green cloth. Externally smart with the odd mark. Signs of fading to board extremities. Bumping to the head and tail of the spines, with slight lifting to cloth at spine heads. End papers are generally clean, with the odd mark and spot. Previous owner's bookplates to front paste downs. Internally, volume 1 is firmly bound. Binding has failed between plates 21-29 and 50-57 in volume 2. Pages are bright and generally clean, with spotting to the final leaves.
