Edited by Thomas Bowdler (1754-1825), whose “bowdlerised” editions became highly influential in 19th-century publishing, shaping Victorian attitudes to family reading and literary morality.
With the bookplate of Lanto M. Synge (1937-2021) to the front paste down, noted V&A curator and leading authority on historic textiles and decorative arts.
Condition
Bound in a full morocco binding Externally, very smart. Very slight rubbing and bumping to extremities. Bookplate of Lanto M. Synge to front paste down. Tide marking to upper fore edge of front free endpaper. The odd slight handling mark and spot to endpapers. Previous owner's contemporary ink inscription to upper title page. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean if slightly age toned. The odd light spot to first and last few leaves, and one or two spots and handling marks to fore edge.
