    This 1847 edition is part of John Murray's "Home and Colonial Library" series, which aimed to make significant literary works accessible to a broader audience. First UK edition, thus. 

    This is a comprehensive collection of memoirs by Karl August Varnhagen von Ense, selected and translated by Sir Alexander Duff Gordon, providing a vivid account of German society during the tumultuous period of the Napoleonic Wars.

    Varnhagen von Ense (1785–1858) was a German biographer, diplomat, and soldier who participated in the campaigns against Napoleon. His firsthand accounts provide invaluable insights into the political and military landscape of early 19th-century Germany.

    Condition

    Rebound in cloth. Externally, smart. Slight rubbing and spotting to boards with one or two handling marks. Spine faded. Slight rubbing to extremities. Bookplate of Richard Fothergill's crest to front paste down. One or two spots to endpapers. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with one or two spots, heavier to fore edge and first and last few leaves.
