Description

Leather Binding, Rebound

In full calf binding with gilt decoration to spine.

Sir Archibald Alison, 1st Baronet FRSE (29 December 1792 - 23 May 1867) was a Scottish advocate and historian. He held several prominent legal appointments. When travelling in France in 1814 Alison conceived the idea of his expansive History of Europe from the Commencement of the French Revolution to the Restoration of the Bourbons.

This seven volume collection consists of the following, covering the various periods:

Volume IV: Terror, 1793–1794.

Volume VI: Directory & 18 Brumaire, 1795–1799.

Volume IX: Marengo to Amiens, 1805-1806.

Volume X: Rise of the Empire, 1806–1807.

Volume XVIII: The Leipzig campaign, 1813-1814.

Volume XIX: Invasion of France & abdication, 1814-1815.

Volume XX: Waterloo, the first Peace of Paris & analytical index, 1815.

First issued in ten volumes (1833‑43), the work was re‑set and greatly expanded for the Seventh Edition of 1847‑52, when each of the original ten books was split in two to make a hand‑sized 12mo library set of twenty volumes.

The final volume present in this collection, volume twenty, is the companion Atlas to Alison’s History of Europe (1848, folio), compiled by the Scottish cartographer Alexander Keith Johnston, containing numerous hand‑coloured campaign and battle plans, designed to be consulted alongside the text.

Condition

In full calf binding. Externally, smart. The bindings to volumes IV and VI differ ever so slightly, and are considerably faded externally. The odd slight handling mark to boards, with one or two scratches. Rubbing to extremities and boards, resulting in slight loss to calf. Slight creasing to spines. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and generally clean. The odd slight handling mark and one or two spots, heavier to fore edge and first and last few leaves.
