Second edition, revised. With a portrait frontispiece. A collection of lectures delivered in Vienna on the philosophy of history, exploring subjects such as the dispute in primitive history, the constitution of the Chinese Empire, intellectual character in the four principal nations, and more. Written by Karl Wilhelm Friedrich von Schlegel, a German poet, literary critic, philosopher, philologist, and Indologist considered one of the main figures of Jena Romanticism. Translated with a memoir of the author by James Patrick Bannerman Robertson, Baron Robertson, a Scottish judge and Conservative politician. Previously held in the library of Francis Pierrepont Barnard, an English Professor of Mediaeval Archaeology at the University of Liverpool.
Condition
In the original full cloth binding. Externally, sound with light rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Minor fading to the spine with the odd small mark to the boards. Small splits in the cloth to the joints. Hinges just starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot. Light age toning to the endpapers with a contemporary ink inscription to the front endpaper. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown.
