Inscribed by the compiler of this work, H. Hillier of Didsbury, Lancashire, to the front free endpaper, dated 1846.
Commonplace books were popular in this period, and consisted of handwritten and copied out extracts from texts appreciated by the compiler.
This volume features 286 pages of copied out pages by Hellier, with a directory to the start of the work.
Featuring passages from Lord Byron, Thomas Arnold, John Dryden, Rev. Robert Hall, Dr. Johnson, Thomas Moore, and others. Many of these passages have a moral message, or offer advice to the reader.
Condition
In a half morocco binding, with marbled paper covered boards. Significant rubbing to back strip, board perimeters, and centre of boards. Rear hinge strained, but firmly held. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright, and handwritten throughout.
