The first and only edition of this work. Very scarce work. Illustrated with fifty engraved plates depicting these remarkable ancient treasures. Collated complete. Published in the hope of furnishing working drawings of some important articles of church furniture, selected after exploring the ancient inventories of the sacred vessels within previously rich cathedrals and parish churches of Britain. Previously held in the libraries of Sir Lewis Amherst Selby-Bigge, a British civil servant, barrister, and scholar, and Harry William Hitchcock, a Church of England clergyman and son of stockbroker Charles Hitchcock.
Condition
Bound in full cloth with the original paper wraps bound in. Externally, smart with light rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. Fading to the spine with the odd mark to the boards. Small splits in the cloth to the head and tail of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with scattered spotting throughout. Light age toning to the endpapers. Previous owners' bookplates and a library sticker to the front pastedown.
