This work discusses the origins of monachism and its gradual development, with accounts of its progress in England and its key events and figures, including the establishment of the Benedictine rule and sketches of the later monasteries, including Peterborough, Abingdon and Glastonbury.
Written by Samuel Fox, Rector of Morley, Derbyshire.
Condition
In the original cloth binding. Externally, with loss of cloth to the spine head and splits to the joints' cloth. With damp stains to the rear board and shelf wear. Bookplate from Crawley Library, St. Michael's, Highgate to the front pastedown. Internally, engraved plate is detached but present, otherwise work is firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with the odd spot, and a contemporary ink inscription to the half title page.
