French. Complete in two volumes, bound into one. A new edition, reviewed and corrected by M. L'Abbe Lejeune. Illustrated with a frontispiece and two plates to each volume, for a total of six plates. Collated complete. A Spanish novel originally published in two parts in 1605 and 1615, considered a founding work of Western literature and often said to be the first modern novel. The plot revolves around the adventures of a member of the lowest nobility, a hidalgo from La Mancha named Alonso Quijano, who reads so many chivalric romances that he loses his mind and decides to become a knight-errant to revive chivalry. Written by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, a Spanish writer widely regarded as the greatest writer in the Spanish language and one of the world's pre-eminent novelists.
Condition
Bound in half calf with cloth covered boards. Externally, sound with light rubbing and fading to the extremities. The odd small mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with scattered spotting throughout. Two small holes to the half-title of volume two. With contemporary ink inscriptions to both half-titles.
