What Our Customers Say...
Description
Original Binding, Very Scarce
A very scarce work.
Five regimental clothing and savings bank accounts books bound in one volume, from 1845 to 1865, a fascinating insight into military service during the Victorian era.
This book belonged to No. 2146 Private William Carter of the 43rd Regiment of Light Infantry. In particular, this work details Carter's experience serving in the Cape of Good Hope and the East Indies, and during the Xhosa War, during which he was wounded in both hips. Carter was awarded the Kaffir Medal and the Indian Mutiny Medal.
Loosely inserted is Carter's discharge certificate, dated 19th December 1865, when he was "found unfit for further service". At this point, Carter had been enlisted for 20 years and 163 days, from the age of 18.
The first work in this volume contains general rules and regulations, with handwritten notes on Carter's wounds and distinguished actions, and information on his next of kin.
Lacking pages 3 to 6 of the second work, and the rear wrap.
