A landmark French social novel, first published in instalments in the newspaper Journal des débats from 1842 to 1843, the story follows the wealthy nobleman Rodolphe, who disguises himself to live among the poor in Paris, moving through the city’s criminal underworld.
Eugène Sue (1804-1857) was a French novelist whose socially engaged fiction made him one of the most widely read writers of the mid-19th century. His work inspired major political and literary reactions, including the rise of the serial feuilleton novel.
Condition
Bound in half morocco binding with marbled paper boards. Externally, smart. Slight rubbing and bumping to extremities, resulting in slight loss to morocco. Slight rubbing to boards with the odd scratch. One small spot of damp staining to volume I. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean, if slightly age toned with the odd spot and handling mark, heavier to first and last few leaves and fore edges.
