The first edition of the work. Uncommon. With twelve plates, two of which are folding and one is double page, as called for. Collated complete. The History of Stowmarket traces the rise of Stowmarket from its Anglo‑Saxon “stow” origins through Domesday, medieval markets, wool and malting trades, religious upheavals, industrial expansion and disasters. It draws on local parish records to link the town’s development with the wider history of Suffolk and England in the nineteenth century.

Condition

In half morocco. Externally a trifle rubbed, with loss to extremities of leather. Fading to spine. The odd mark to the board. Evidence of bookplate removal to front paste down. Endpapers renewed. Internally firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean with scattered spotting and handling marks. Colour pencil number to recto of front free endpaper.
