First edition. Illustrated with one-hundred and twenty-four plates. Collated complete. A monograph exploring the baptismal fonts examples in churches across Britain, an interesting contribution to the study of ecclesiastical antiquities. The fonts in this volume date as far back as Norman England, alongside examples of both decorated and perpendicular fonts, from churches in Axbridge, Galway, Leicester, Saffron Walden, St. Neots, and more. Compiled by Thomas Combe, a British printer, publisher and patron of the arts. Engraved by Thomas Orlando Sheldon Jewitt, a British architectural wood-engraver. With an introduction by Frederick Apthorp Paley, an English classical scholar.
Condition
In the original full cloth binding. Externally, smart with light rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. Minor fading to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot. Age toning to the endpapers.
