The first report of the commissioners regarding their inquiry into the state of large towns and populous districts, with an appendix. A second report was published the following year.

Although no author is mentioned, this work has been attributed to Sir Edwin Chadwick, an English social reformer who is noted for his strong impact improving public health and urban sanitation through law reforms in the nineteenth century.

This comprehensive report comprises the commissioner's findings on the sanitary condition of several towns, as well as the adequacy of the supply and filtration of water. In addition, the report outlines possible obstacles to improvement, and discusses the application of street cleaning and refuse removal.

With an index of names of witnesses, minutes of evidence, an analysis of the evidence and an index of principal matters.

Reports such a this one paved the way for improved living conditions, advocating for measures such as clean water provision, improved drainage and adequate waste removal. 

Illustrated with twenty plates, eight of which are folding. Some plates have been hand coloured.

Collated, complete.

With the stamp of the Royal College of Surgeons of England to the title page.

Rebound in hardback boards, with the blanks retained and endpapers renewed. Externally, very smart, with light rubbing to the extremities and a few marks. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean.
