1843 The Natural History of Man
What Our Customers Say...
Description
Colour Plates, First Edition, Illustrated, Leather Binding, Rebound
The uncommon first edition of this work from important nineteenth century ethnologist and physician James Cowles Prichard.
In this work, Prichard expressed his views about the 'specific unity of man' - or monogenism - and his belief that the same inward nature can be recognised within all races, and that we all descend from a common ancestor. In part due to his view, Prichard was an early member of the Aborigines' Protection Society.
Illustrated with thirty-six hand coloured plates - including a frontispiece - and with five steel engraved plates. Usually, this work is found with four steel engraved plates only. With a further ninety vignette illustrations. Collated, complete.
Rebound, with endpapers renewed. Retaining the original half title, and with two original blanks to the rear.
Not present here is the folio of six maps that is seldom found with this work.
A richly illustrated ethnographic study from an expert in the field.
Condition
Rebound in half morocco, with cloth covered boards, and endpapers renewed. Externally, fine. Internally, firmly bound. Retaining the original half title. Pages exceptionally bright, and with only the odd spot. Handling marks to title page.
