First Edition, Publishers' Original Binding, Very Scarce
This is the very scarce first US edition of Tennyson's most substantial collected edition of his poetical works to date.
Complete in two volumes. In the publisher's original boards, retaining the original half titles.
A significant amount of material appears for the first time in the US in these volumes.
Including poems such as 'Claribel', 'Morte d'Arthur', 'Audley Court' and 'The Beggar Maid'.
Contemporary ink inscription to volume I half title, dated 1845.
This edition is noteworthy in being the first publication by a foreign author published in the US in which the author was compensated by the publisher. This represented an important milestone in the history of copyright protection.
Condition
In the publisher's original boards. Significant loss of paper to back strip head and tail of volume II. Tape repairs to back strip tail and tail of boards of volume I. Part of volume I back strip label lacking. Front board of volume II detached. Joints starting, with rear board of volume II and boards of volume I firmly held. Contemporary ink inscription to volume I half title. Internally, binding of volume II strained to centre, otherwise firmly bound. Pages clean and bright, but with light spotting to first and last few leaves of each volume.
