What Our Customers Say...

Description

Original Binding, Very Scarce

A vanishingly scarce volume on domestic cookery and medical advice for parents. Seen only once at auction in the last forty years.

Second edition. First published in 1838.

In the original quarter cloth binding, with paper boards.

This cookery book aims to prioritise the family's health with its recipes, with regards to diet and domestic duties, such as purchasing butcher's meat and selecting dishes suitable for every month.

Instructions written by J. Morrison include 'To Toss up Cold Veal', 'To Stew Tripe', 'To Make Snow-Balls' and 'To Restore Flat Wines', among many more.

From the library of Jill Norman, an editor and food writer. Norman began working at Penguin in the early 1960s and, as the only woman, the care of the company's cookery books fell to her. It was her responsibility to expand the cookery titles Penguin produced, and thus began to publish works by Jane Grigson, Claudia Roden, and Alan Davidson. In particular Norman worked closely with the famed cookery writer Elizabeth David, with whom she was good friends.

Condition

Internally, firmly bound. Pages are age toned, with occasional scattered spots, heaviest to the first couple leaves. Bookplate of Jill Norman to the front free endpaper. Top of preface leaf chipped.
