First Edition, Illustrated, Leather Binding

The first edition, second issue, with the corrected state of 'young publisher' to the introduction of Volume I, and G. J. Palmer stated as the printers to the title versos.

Complete in three volumes.

An anthology primarily consisting of short stories, with a smattering of poetry and essays. 

This set was published to raise funds for the widow of the publisher of Dickens' first book, John Macrone, who had died in 1837 and left his wife and children in destitution. 

Edited by Charles Dickens, who contributed 'The Lamplighter's Story' to the collection. Other pieces in this anthology are 'Esther', 'Count Ludwig', and 'Olympus Pump'.

Volume I illustrated with a frontispiece, and three plates. Collated, complete.

Volume II illustrated with a frontispiece, and three plates. Eight pages of publisher's adverts to the rear, dated May 1841. Collated, complee.

Volume III illustrated with a frontispiece, and five plates. Bound without the publisher's adverts, but all plates are present.

Illustrated by eminent Victorian hands such as George Cruikshank and Phiz.

Condition

In a half morocco binding with cloth to the boards. Externally, smart. Light rubbing to the leather. A small patch of leather lifting to the head of the spine of Volume II. A few minor marks to the boards. Spines are lightly faded, boards are a little faded to the extremities. Bookplate to the front paste downs. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with the occasional scattered spot.
